Place-Making Practices in a Transnational Space: Constructing a Spatial Imaginary of Democratic Citizenship Education

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In response to AERA’s theme this year, the current study aims to explore the power and possibilities for democratic citizenship education in the United States when members at a Vietnamese American Buddhist temple were invited to explore their cultural and national identity through their place-making practices. Beyond languages or religions, this project aimed to explore how the place-making practices employed by members of the temple construct the place they live, cultivate members’ connections to the community and (re)create their identity as American citizens.
