Social Thinking Assessment: Validating a Classroom Assessment for Feedback and Practice

Abstract

This paper presents validity evidence analysis for an instrument aiming to measure Social Thinking. In a critical citizenship education perspective, the new measure integrates different disciplines in Social Studies. 186 students answer an authentic assessment based on a socially relevant problem in the first week in university. Their answers were analyzed with a rubric of 12 items aiming to capture four Social Thinking skills. Reliability analysis and Structural Equation Modelling were applied using RStudio. Evidence is mixed: we observe high levels of reliability and acceptable fit for the four dimensions according the four theoretical dimensions defined. However, some factorial loadings were weak respect the latent variable. This research discusses a Social Thinking construct and presents new challenges for research approach.
