Understanding the Development of Instructors' Lightboard Capacity Over Time

Abstract

Within the space of video capture in higher education, the use of Lightboards has seen large growth over the last 5 years. This paper builds on the existing literature on Lightboard usage and impact (Stull, et al., 2018) by exploring how the faculty members that use such systems develop the capacities associated with the affordances and constraints of the technology (Mayer, 2014) in their instruction. Using a thematic and emergent coding structure, 80 videos of 3 faculty were coded and compiled into descriptive cases. The cases presented highlight specific faculty developed capacities (hand gestures, virtual eye contact) along with areas of challenge (vocal inflection & staying on mark). Further within case details and next steps of the research are discussed.
