Collaborating Through Care: Creating a Transdisciplinary Self-Study of Online Teaching Practices Group Across Campus

Abstract

Six faculty established a transdisciplinary collaborative inquiry group in 2017-2018. The group met biweekly over two academic years to study their own online teaching practices in a supportive community and to generate scholarship of teaching that could be shared with diverse university stakeholders. This paper describes how the group’s identifying care as a shared, transdisciplinary value led to care as a conduit for collaboration, a lens for studying teaching practices, a stance for transformation, and a focus for inquiry in the larger university community. Implications extend care beyond an ethic or philosophy by conceptualizing care as an object and medium for collaborative S-STEP research and a possible conduit for collaboration with organizational stakeholders.
