Building Collaboration and Reciprocal Relationships With a Diverse Military Family in Special Education

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In this narrative inquiry, the researcher explored the lived experiences of a culturally diverse military parent’s life navigating issues of race, the special education system, and military life. Previous research has brought to light the challenges military families face in navigating special education due to military life. However, the additional challenges faced by military families of color have not been thoroughly addressed. In this study, the building of reciprocal relationships with the participant led to deep collaboration and the sharing of stories, which might not otherwise have been revealed. Developing reciprocal relationships and collaboration are at the heart of how this research was conducted but are also the essence of the researcher’s forward-looking stories and wonders.
