I Am Not Your Superwoman: Undergraduate Black Women Leadership Experiences at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) continue to be the top choice of at least one out of five African American college students and Black women. However, little is known about the leadership experiences of undergraduate Black women at HBCUs in elected student leadership positions. This paper explores the experiences of 18 Black women from 17 different HBCUs who were student leaders on their respective campuses. Findings suggest that many of the women’s experiences are based on being everything to everyone, including formal and informal leadership positions.
