Replication Studies in Rural Contexts: What Works for Whom Under What Conditions

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Replication studies allow researchers to determine what intervention works for whom under what conditions, which is important in considering how interventions play out in diverse setting and populations. Here, we characterize key baseline differences of participants in a social-emotional learning program, INSIGHTS, previously tested in New York City (NYC) schools, through a replication study implemented in rural Nebraska (NE) schools. Participants include 72 students from 8 rural NE elementary schools randomly assigned to the INSIGHTS program and a comparison population from prior implementation. We find NE parents have higher employment and income, are less ethnically diverse, and have significantly lower school-involvement than NYC parents. NE students are significantly more academically prepared and have significant differences in temperament compared to NYC.
