How social studies teachers assert (and negotiate) critical stances highlights both the context of contemporary classrooms and the politics of belonging. In too many ways schools are warped by a pervasive neoliberal agenda that serves to constrict rather than nurture inclusive and democratic spaces (Author 2, 2018). For instance, the official school curriculum employs a myriad of mechanisms of control that ensure a dehumanizing and marginalizing experiences for African American (e.g. Vickery, 2017), Asian American (e.g. Naseem Rodriguez, 2018), Latinx (e.g. Santiago, 2016), Indigenous (e.g. Lomawaima, 2002), and the LGBTQ communities (e.g. Flinders & Thornton, 2003).
