Enhancing Intercultural Competence With the Implementation of Cross-National Project-Based Learning

Abstract

This multi-case study provides an accounting of U.S. and African students from sub-Saharan countries engaged in a cross-cultural project-based learning activity in a higher education context. Groups consisting of both U.S-based. and African-based students were formed for collaboration on a research methods project. The project was implemented over a six week period in the context of a virtual community of practice. Communication is an important element of group interactions and is especially important when groups are comprised of members from different cultures. Data were derived from chat groups, discussion forums, journals, and personal communications with students. Information gleaned from this project-based learning experience documents the process and outcomes and serves as a potential model for implementation in other venues.
