Teachers’ satisfaction with their working environment can affect teacher outcomes such as attrition and performance. However, few studies address how teacher satisfaction can affect students’ own motivation or engagement. This study examines whether math teachers’ satisfaction with their school’s work environment directly or indirectly affects how their students experience the learning environment of their high school math classrooms. To address this research question, I use data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 to estimate a structural equation model. I find three dimensions of math teachers’ satisfaction with their working environment indirectly affect how high school students perceive their classroom learning environment through teacher efficacy and teacher instructional practices (traditional versus constructivist instruction).
