Addressing the challenges faced by faculty, staff, and students from marginalized, under-represented populations is an initial step in uncovering the realities related to diversity and inclusion in higher education settings. This case study explored a six-session conversation series designed to offer insight into solutions for embracing diversity and creating an inclusive teaching and learning community. Data revealed themes of being “othered”, experiencing emotions, offering solutions, and uncovering beliefs as participants engaged in the conversation series in a higher education setting. Conclusions support the need for solutions that move beyond “cosmetic” (Hoffman & Mitchell, 2016); address the complex nature of identity and diversity; and provide a multi-layered understanding and approach toward actualizing an inclusive environment both online and on campus.
