A Pilot Study of Learner-Immersed Virtual Interactive Expedition

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Leveraging the technology of Spherical Video-based Immersive Virtual Reality (SV-IVR), we have developed Learner-Immersed Virtual Interactive Expedition (LIVIE)—a pedagogic framework that integrates immersive and interactive virtual enquiry-based fieldwork into learning and teaching of Physical Geography. Apart from delineating the pedagogic design of LIVIE, this paper also reports on our pilot study for investigating its pedagogic effectiveness in the context of formal curriculum learning and teaching. The study involved a total of 196 students from three high schools respectively at three different academic bands in Hong Kong. The research findings were positive, providing researchers and educators with empirical evidence for supporting the educational use of SV-IVR in both Geography education and formal education.
