"Models of Making": Educators' Practical Constraints for Making in Formal and Informal Spaces

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This paper examines the models of making that emerged over the course of several years for educators and facilitators who implemented making into their classrooms or after-school programs. We look at how educators initiate making activities, the kinds of projects they land on, and the impact of design choices on student engagement. This work contributes to efforts to illuminate how making is taken up, implemented, and sustained in both formal and informal learning environments. Finally, it calls attention to the sociocultural and political context that constrains or drives making practices and goals.
