Equitable Nursing Education Simulation Through Holographic Video: Measuring Student Knowledge, Skill, and Motivation to Learn

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Nursing education relies on simulation to provide standardized and safe clinical experiences to prepare nurses care for complex patient scenarios. Unfortunately, traditional simulation modalities are often equitably cost-prohibitive. Innovation in immersive technology provides a new modality for high quality simulation that is more affordable than traditional devices. Early studies indicate immersive technology is an effective modality to deliver educational simulation, however the existing research is not yet conclusive. Participating students (n=161) were randomly assigned to three different modalities of instruction. The results indicated two-dimensional video provided the highest degree of knowledge and skill, while immersive simulation resulted in increased student motivation to learn. These results have implications for affordable and authentic simulation to teach low-frequency, high-risk scenarios.
