Science Notebook in a Universal Design for Learning Environment: Participant Partnerships and Large-Scale Evaluation Implementation

Abstract

The Science Notebook in a Universal Design for Learning Environment (SNUDLE) is a digital notebook that uses the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to support active science learning among elementary school students, particularly those who struggle with reading and writing or are unmotivated to learn science. Using qualitative source materials from meetings and interviews with administrators and teachers along with classroom observation, this paper describes the challenges and successes of implementing and evaluating an intervention that employs UDL principles. From these findings, we illustrate the critical partnerships needed across districts, schools, and researchers in order to successfully integrate new educational technologies into elementary science classrooms.
