A Meta-Analysis of the Effects of Competition in Digital Game-Based Learning

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Digital game-based learning (DGBL) has become a prevalent approach that facilitates learning across disciplines. Reviews have been conducted regarding the effect of DGBL and the results have been mixed. Recently, researchers advocate exploring the effects of various game elements within DGBL. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to explore the effects of competition, a key game element in DGBL on learning outcomes and learning processes. The results suggested that competition in DGBL was positive on both learning outcomes and learning processes. However, the effects were not equal for different game types, subject domains, and ages. Implications for future research and game design will be discussed at the conference.
