"I'm Not Crazy!" Testifying, Knowledge-Building, and Theorizing in Garrets With Preservice Teachers of Color

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

When preservice teachers of Color enter into teacher education programs, many of the teacher education programs do not provide meaningful support and visibility in the areas of pedagogy, curriculum, and mentoring, all of which are crucial components for preservice teachers of Color entering a field dominated by and complicit in maintaining patriarchy and white supremacy (Sleeter and Milner, 2011; Machado, 2013; Haddix, 2017; Gist 2017). In this paper, I explore how the creation of garrets (McKittrick, 2006), with preservice teachers of Color helped to establish a place for preservice teachers of Color to draw on racial, cultural, gendered, and historical knowledges and discourses to affirm, resist and reshape perceptions of who they are, what they know, and what they need.
