This paper draws from recent transdisciplinary research to examine how nineteenth and twentieth century concerns with securing bodies and hearts moved into school mathematics reform through racialized, gendered, and abilized fears of 'insanity' that differently threatened the stability of an emerging U.S. republic. The paper problematizes some of the limit points of a proliferation of reforms premised on addressing health concerns through mathematics education research, such as through trauma-informed care, new materialisms, affective "turns", and mathematical mindsets.
