Maintaining Standards and Excellence in an Elementary Teacher Education Program: Establishing Relationships Between K–12 Schools and University

Abstract

State and national policies/laws, in a ‘post-truth’ era, are impacting public education as never before seen. The need to establish beneficial partnerships between K-12 schools and teacher education programs (TEP) is vital. The perception that TEPs and the “real” world of public schooling are not aligned perpetuates dissatisfaction and distrust between the two entities. Our TEP has developed relationships with public schools and provides the possibility of bridging the gap between higher education and the public schools. The need to see all involved in the preparation of students K – college graduation as working in tandem is important for the continued development of more responsive and committed teacher candidates to meet the needs of all students.
