Organizational Features Associated With Safety in Charter Schools: An Analysis of National Data

Abstract

School safety has fueled the growth of charter schools. Yet, few statistical studies have investigated potential organizational factors that may be underlying school safety in charter schools. This study investigates factors underlying safety in charter schools by merging five waves of the School Survey on Crime and Safety to Common Core Data. Results from analyses of 12,698 schools suggested that school-based parent volunteering and school size are associated with fewer incidents of crime, violence, and disruptions in charter schools. A key contribution of this research is that it may provide valuable insight on approaches to school safety that may be extended to both charter and public schools.
