How Can We Mesh and Connect? Analysis of Comments From a Statewide Early Literacy Training

Abstract

With literacy scores falling, the state of Michigan is making enhanced efforts to disseminate the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy Pre-Kindergarten. To ensure fidelity of implementation, a series of training of trainers (ToT) were conducted with participants from across the state in three different locations, lasting four days each. Participant feedback on the training sessions was gathered using surveys and focus groups. Surveys were completed by 262 participants and interactive feedback was collected from six focus groups following the training. Through coding of the data, the authors found two overarching themes: 1) barriers of implementation of the new initiative, and 2) suggestions for improvement of the training. This paper presents in-depth information on the knowledge gained from the ToTs.
