This qualitative study examining how students in an online course in rural Appalachia incorporate Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in their instructional products. Results indicate that teachers are willing to center racial and ethnic diversity in their practice and in the online course. To their detriment, two themes hamper their ability to be culturally responsive: a lack of programmatic support through their education program and a limited conceptualization of what constitutes student diversity. In spite of a popular preconceived notion about teachers in rural Appalachia, each of the participants voiced a strong desire to be culturally responsive.
