Urban Parent Teacher Education Collaborative Revisited: The Longitudinal Impact of Engaging Parents as Teacher Educators

Abstract

This paper examines the longitudinal impact of the Urban Parent Teacher Education Collaborative (UPTEC); a six-year case study (2006-2012) developed to test a community-based model of teacher education that fully included urban parents and community leaders in the education of pre-service teachers. Co-taught by a university faculty member and a grassroots parent advocate, UPTEC sought to understand how a community-based approach to teacher education shaped candidates’ teaching and retention within urban schools/communities. Re-examining this case study ten years later provides longitudinal, empirically-based findings that explore university/community engagement with urban schools, teacher retention, and how this work influences teacher educators and community leaders. This paper provides guiding principles for developing and engaging community-based teacher education programs.
