Restorying Horror: Creating Space for Intersectional Identities Within a Historically Hegemonic Genre

Abstract

This paper considers how restorying (Thomas & Stornaiuolo, 2016) offers adolescent writers a space in the horror genre to express their identities and experiences. The author will share findings from an eight-week unit of study at a public school in a Northeastern city of the United States. During the study, the adolescent participants (n=73) collaborated to build critical awareness of horror conventions and (re)center their intersectional identities through multimodal restoryings of Neil Gaiman’s “The Price” (2005).
