An Exploration of Unique Ethical Conundrums Faced by Mixed Methods Researchers

Abstract

We interviewed ten mixed methods researchers about their experiences with and perspectives of ethical issues unique to mixed methods work. After thematic analysis, our findings centered around three major themes; (1) considerations surrounding time commitments from participants, (2) considerations surrounding duplicate data responses, and (3) considerations surrounding conducting research in a way that does not harm the participants. We explore these findings, as well as supply five ethical scenarios created through a narrative restorying process that may be used to facilitate discussion in classrooms, conferences, and workshops. This work is important because there has been a greater call toward transparency within the field of mixed methods research.
