Engaging Educational Change: A Model for University Internationalization at Home

Abstract

The recent shift in higher education from study abroad toward internationalization at home initiatives, wherein students interact with people from cultures outside their own while remaining on home campuses, offers fresh possibilities for educational change. This AERA 2020 presentation reports case study research exploring how and what students gain from participation with a nonformal university initiative, the World Language and Culture Program (WLCP). Recommendations for institutions of higher education are to consider nonformal learning initiatives such as the WLCP as viable and authentic strategies for internationalization at home. This is especially valuable to USA students, faculty, and staff who are new to studying, working, and living in diverse linguistic and cultural communities.
