Abstract

This work focuses on a university program designed around ‘Progressive Pedagogy’ which is the ability to intersect academic and social-emotional components of learning to assist in positive academic and social achievement. The program focuses on three main theories; mindset, interdependence and resilience. Dweck's Mindset theory (2007) helps to cultivate students' self-efficacy and encourage persistence. Independence in college students can often present a “culture clash” for students with more interdependent world-views and potentially interferes with seeking assistance when needed (Markus & Conner, 2013). Duckworth et al. (2007) extends the concept of resilience to include “grit,” which is passion and persistence for a particular task through completion. Students reflect on how persistence and self-reflection can lead to positive academic and individual growth.
