Longitudinal Relationships Among Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Adolescents' Acculturative Stress, Parental Support, and Dropout Risk Factors

Abstract

This study examined a longitudinal relationship among acculturative stress, parental support, and dropout risk factors of multi-ethnic adolescents in South Korea. The analyzed data was a three-wave longitudinal sample from the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Data, consisted of 1,271 multiethnic adolescents (7th to 9th grades, Female 50.7%). The results, through the latent growth mediation model, indicated that acculturative stress had a direct effect on decreasing parental support, and parental support had a direct effect on decreasing school dropout risk. Parental support had a longitudinal mediation role in a relationship between acculturative stress and dropout risk factors. This study supports the idea that enhancing parental support may reduce the negative effect of acculturative stress and prevent school dropout.
