Data literacy is an important 21st century skill and developing assessments aligned with the ‘Data and analysis’ guidelines of the CS framework is critical. We developed Beats Empire, a game-based formative assessment tool for middle school data literacy that draws from theoretical foundations of culturally relevant pedagogy, constructionist games, and Evidence Centered Design. We examine log data from a pilot study using Beats and show that while some actions are indicative of proficiency on data-related measures, lack of evidence of such actions does not necessarily indicate lack of proficiency. Students’ in-game choices may reflect personal tastes in music and general gaming strategies. We conclude by discussing teacher supports for leveraging students’ game-play information using a dashboard and follow-up classroom activities.
