Understanding Student Engagement at the Item and Student Levels on a State Summative Assessment

Tue, April 21, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This study investigated test-taking engagement on statewide assessments. Each item response was classified as either a rapid guess or a solution behavior using a time threshold, and student engagement during a test event was represented by response time effort. The results indicate that the overall amount of disengaged test taking is low, though in higher grades the rates of material disengagement became sizable. The results also indicate the students are more likely to rapid guess on items more complex or time-consuming, and they will typically do poorly. These findings provide valuable clues regarding which students are likely to disengage during a test event or which items are likely to have students disengage or re-engage.
