Getting to Class: Commute Distance and Undergraduate Student Success

Abstract

For a student, time spent commuting is like time spent working – that is, the more time spent commuting is less time spent on academic work or in the kinds of co-curricular activities that together affect academic performance. This study specifically focuses on academic performance, examining the relationship between commuting distance to/from campus and student success. Outcome measures include term GPA and units earned. This is exploratory analysis focusing on a single term and will set the stage for a time-series analysis that will include graduation and retention measures.
