Abstract

Adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and childhood trauma impact learning outcomes of children nationwide. The prevalence of students having experienced one to two ACEs in the last year is approximately fifty percent nationally. This number of ACE experiences and/or exposures as well as its related sequelae is intensified in impoverished communities. Currently 50% of the seats in urban public schools are filled with socio-economically disadvantaged students of color who are being disproportionately impacted by this phenomena. This study reveals that while most school leaders are aware of ACEs and their ramifications in the lives of students, few, if any are prepared to harness the ACE and trauma related research to build the trauma sensitive environments needed to maximize their academic potential.
