Analyzing Charter Schools Use of Zero-Tolerance Discipline Practices to Impact "Excellence"

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This proposal includes data from a larger grant evaluation of an urban charter school located in the Midwest. Using Critical Theory as our theoretical lens, we examine the socio-cultural and historical context of zero-tolerance policies which police the behaviors of Black and Brown students. Upon examining teachers and administrators’ discussion around zero-tolerance we found three themes for how charter schools use zero-tolerance policies to enforce their definition of excellence: classroom management, developmentally appropriate behaviors, and dressed for success. We conclude by suggesting the use of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy as a solution to counter zero-tolerance policies.
