LGBT-Q teachers face unique challenges navigating a landscape of judicial decisions, legal interpretations, statutes, and policies regarding their identity and professional security. To better understand the unique experiences of LGBT-Q teachers positioned in particular settings, this single case study design focuses on one LGBT-Q teacher having experienced working in public-schools within three geographic regions of the U.S., each distinctly representing employment experiences influenced by community morality and various legal realities.
Research findings include a discussion of teaching locations with unique political realities. a need for LGBT-Q issues and subjects within teacher education and professional development, and the vital role of policy awareness for teachers. Implications for research, policy, and practice are discussed in relation to the conference theme.
