Abstract

Artists breathe in the world; then exhale visual imagery. Thus, visual representation is a complex construction of reactions and responses to our environment and experiences. Much like visual representation, mixed methods research involves the construction of complex knowledge from participant responses and reactions. These responses form the basis of quantitative and qualitative data; both necessary to inform effective decision-making.
GIS (geospatial information systems) provides a unique and powerful addition to our mixed methods “toolbox” – a way to represent complex phenomena with geospatial attributes. The purpose of this study was to describe contemporary utilization of GIS, examine ways to incorporate GIS technology with mixed methods approaches, and provide visual crossover recommendations to construct variable narratives of the phenomena of interest.
