The transition to kindergarten is a foundational period in a child’s life that can have an impact on their life trajectory. Nevertheless, low-income Latino children are at a higher risk for being unprepared for the transition. Researchers often claim that Latino families are less involved in transition practices, especially when compared to White and African-American peers. As a means to challenge these deficit perspectives of Latino families during the transition, this study aims to highlight the value, strengths, and resiliency that siblings of transitioning preschoolers bring to the transitioning process through photo-elicitation interviewing and a resiliency framework. Preliminary findings suggest that siblings have a unique position within the family structure to facilitate and foster a successful transition to kindergarten.
