Perceived Discrimination and Educational Attainment of Immigrant Children: The Mediating Role of Self-Esteem

Abstract

This study investigates the medication effect of self-esteem in the relation of perceived discrimination and educational attainment of immigrant children. Using the data from a longitudinal project focusing on first-generation immigrants (N=3,264), the researchers build structural equation models to demonstrate the mediation role of self-esteem. After controlling participants’ background variables, the findings indicated that perceived discrimination has a significant effect on college attendance; self-esteem mediates the relationship between perceived discrimination and college attendance.
