Abstract

This project aims to examine the enablers and barriers to optimal learning experienced by PhD candidates from targeted equity groups to enhance policy and practice across the sector. In this study, our focus was to explore the particular practice contexts and social interactions that doctoral candidates from diverse backgrounds are able to participate in, and how these enable or constrain their doctoral learning. This exploration of pedagogical issues surrounding doctoral learners, and how they interact with their research environment, will pilot an approach to developing a more nuanced understanding of the intersections between teaching, equity and excellence from the candidates’ perspective, and how to better enable candidates from equity backgrounds to navigate their doctoral journey.
