Transforming the Evaluation of Teaching: Stages and Tasks in Organizational Change Processes

Mon, April 20, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Changing the processes for evaluating teaching can contribute to efforts to encourage the use of more effective teaching practices and greater institutional commitment to high-quality teaching. Yet, transforming how teaching is evaluated involves a process of institutional change. This paper draws on a funded study of three universities actively engaged in such change to discuss the stages through which departments progress as they engage in institutional efforts to create and adopt new approaches to evaluating teaching. The paper conceptualizes the stages through which departments progress as they engage in institutional efforts to change teaching evaluation, key issues that departments must address within each stage, and lessons about effective institutional change processes to improve the evaluation of teaching.
