The current trend toward multidimensional science learning and assessment faces several key challenges, including the need for classroom assessments that are authentic, that engage students in science tasks, that can elicit evidence of students’ multidimensional science learning, and that support students and teachers. This paper reports on research that developed science tasks for instruction and assessment centered on interactive, digital simulations and games intended to provide opportunities for sense-making at the intersection of the three dimensions. The evidence gathered demonstrates the assessments’ feasibility for implementation, reliability and validity, and the utility of data for teaching and learning. In comparison to control groups, small to moderate effects show the promise for increased ability to demonstrate multidimensional understanding.
