Factors That Influence Perceptions of Caribbean Teachers on Inclusive Education: A Research Synthesis

Abstract

Teacher perceptions on inclusive education can be a barrier to access to education for students with disabilities. Negative perceptions on disability exists throughout the world, and the Caribbean is no exception. In this region, teachers’ perceptions ultimately affect the manner in which teachers teach students with disabilities in their classrooms, namely, the way in which teachers offer the appropriate instruction for this population where inclusive classrooms do and do not exist. This study synthesized the literature on teacher perceptions on inclusive education in the Caribbean to identify trends across various Caribbean countries regarding teachers’ professional approach toward inclusive classrooms. The findings show that teachers have been found to lack awareness, confidence, preparation, professional development, and resources to support inclusive education.
