Latinx Representation at School and Help-Seeking Attitudes Moderating Mental Health and Bullying Victimization Outcomes

Abstract

This study examines the association between in-group ethnic representation and help-seeking attitudes among Latinx high school students. Bullying victimization and mental health outcomes were also analyzed. Results indicated that the proportion of Latinx students at school was not significantly associated with higher help-seeking attitudes among Latinx students. Higher help-seeking attitudes among Latinx students were significantly associated with lower levels of depression, suicidality and bullying victimization. The proportion of Latinx students at school was also significantly associated with lower levels of depression, suicidality and bullying victimization. In previous literature, experiences of ethnic minority students have been compared to those of white students as a standard. To center the experiences of Latinx students, this study includes an exclusive sample of Latinx students.
