Beyond Classes and Programs: An Ecological Perspective on Honors Student Supports

Abstract

Current research addresses programs that develop the scholarly abilities and holistic wellness of honors students, but institutional factors must be considered to understand support for these college students. This scholarly paper incorporates Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) ecological model as a theoretical perspective through which to examine support for honors students at multiple levels, including cultural structures that impact policy. Implications for this study include providing a framework through which to analyze honors student supports for an individual student or institution, suggestions on how universities can utilize the undergraduate honors population to achieve institutional missions, and an analysis of the type of education best suited for challenging and supporting honors students.
