An imbedded thread of the social studies classroom is to transmit patriotic values. During times of crisis, recovery, and growth, local, state, and federal governments have tasked social studies teachers from preschool to high school with providing students the “official” sense of what it means to be patriotic and ultimately what it means to be an American. This paper seeks to understand how pre-service social studies students conceptualize patriotism and how they see music as a way to explore patriotisms in their future classroom.
