I Don't See Myself: Who We Hire at Community College Hispanic-Serving Institutions Affects Student Success

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 4:15pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Community colleges disproportionally serve Latinx and other underrepresented students. However, faculty do not reflect such diversity even at Hispanic-serving institutions. Hiring practices play a critical role in diversifying faculty which can affect student belongingness, campus climate, and student success because such diversity can have an impact on instructional and pedagogical practices. A community college professor discusses how she implemented a culturally sustaining curriculum and its effect on student success.
