Abstract

This film uses footage from a case study of urban street crossings to evaluate the social science rigor of cinematic methods by peer review standards. It depicts how knowledge of video technologies assisted the research team in identifying an empirical approach to studying gentrification processes. It demonstrates how cameras were used to collect data that could not have been captured by human observation methods, thereby contributing to rigor. The film also depicts the challenges of conducting ethical research on human subjects, and how—in this case—the use of camera equipment helped insure no harm to the residents in the urban community.
