The Parental Bonding Instrument: Alternative Models Comparison and Testing of Factorial Invariance Between Gender Using Categorical Confirmatory Factor Analysis

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare alternative factor structures of the Chinese version of the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI). Parental care and protection were originally defined as the constructs reflected by the PBI, however other researchers have argued for three-factor models comprised of care and two distinct protection-related factors. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to compare these parental bonding models. The primary sample consisted of 493 young adults who completed the 25-item of the PBI and the second sample of 314 completed the 16-item PBI. Three-factor models had a better fit than two-factor models. In addition, the three-factor model with 16-item was found invariant across male and female respondents using CFA techniques with ordered categorical data.
