A Social Media Perspective on the High School to University: Tools Remain, but Uses Change

Abstract

This study reports findings from a survey of university students focused on their social media use and habits during high school and at university. Specifically, it explores how students used social media to support that transition and then, in some instances, changed their approach to social media use for either personal or learning purposes. Findings suggest that social media gives students access to valuable information and helps with network building during the high school to university transition. Additionally, students have more opportunities to use social media to support classroom learning, group projects, and student groups in the university setting, but are likely to reduce their social media posting activities at this time.
