Evaluating the Psychometric Properties of the Academic Capital Scale: A Rasch Modeling Application

Abstract

Academic capital refers to a set of social processes that aid students in acquiring the knowledge and support necessary to access and navigate higher education. Scholars have noted the promise academic capital holds in supporting the success of students from underrepresented backgrounds in higher education. The Academic Capital Scale is a multidimensional quantitative instrument that allows institutions to critically evaluate current programs and services. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Academic Capital Scale using Rasch modeling. Examination of Rasch-Andrich thresholds, Wright-Andrich maps, and differential item functioning guided interpretation. Implications for future improvements to the instrument, as well as applications to diverse student populations are discussed.
