Transnational Adolescents' Multimodal Narratives in a Transborder Space

Abstract

This paper examines how transnational adolescents leverage their linguistic, cultural, and historical resources and contemporary lived experiences in digitally-infused language and literacy curriculum. With the proliferation of social media among youth, this research utilized an educational affinity network to cultivate immigrant adolescents as global citizens by maximizing their language and literacy practices across borders through cross-cultural communications. High school students in the U.S. interacted with adolescents in their heritage country of South Korea to learn from/with one another through a transborder network where students could share multimodal writing in multiple languages. This presentation will highlight practices of meaning-making amongst adolescents and how educators might further support students in developing transnational literacies.
